These still images for New England Biolabs faced stringent “match style” requirements including a dusty-sepia palette and the inevitable “ladder” DNA. Even with a representation as abstract as the twisted ladder, it’s possible to invoke a degree of reality. In this case, a right-handed double helix, major and minor grooves, and a reasonable pitch of ten base-pairs per turn nudge the image into abstract realism.
